surgery again
So it looks like the little guy is going back under the knife again. This will be his third surgery, one in every year of his life. We had a VCUG done at the beginning of September and the results are that he still has significant reflux in his right kidney although the left one is clear. What the urologist is going to do is basically create a new pathway from his kidney to his bladder to go around the troubled area. She will do it for both kidneys in order to avoid reflux reappearing in the left kidney. He will be having his surgery at Hasboro Children's Hospital in Providence because that's where the new urologist is based out of. He will be in the hospital 1-2 nights, hopefully just one! His surgery is scheduled for December 9th. The good news is that after this he will not need any more VCUGs and he will just need one more ultrasound. He will have to continue his regular antibiotics for 3 months after the surgery but for his 3rd birthday present he will be off antiobiotics, thank goodness! He has been on them since he was 5 months old so it will be interesting to see how his body adjusts. The one thing I'm worried about is how this will impact all the potty training we have done. After the surgery he will need to pee every 15 minutes for the first day and then it will tapper off. He is, I would say about 95% toilet trained with a few accidents here and there mainly just because he couldn't get his pants off in time. He even insists on wearing underwear to bed, "I don't want pullups mama, I want underwears." And he has not had an accident during the night for the last 3 nights since he made this declaration. So hopefully by the time the surgery comes he will be trained long enough that he should be ok. He may take a few steps back but he's still young so it's not a big deal.
